Self Care Tips For The Holidays
The holiday’s are a time that everyone is extra busy. So it’s especially easy during those times to forget about what’s most important, which is ourselves. It’s important to pay attention to when we are putting ourselves aside and have too many tasks and events that are put first, so that we can figure out healthy ways to take care of ourselves during this time while balancing our busier than normal schedules.
What Is Self Care?
Self care is the act of caring for yourself without other people’s help or medical assistance. It’s taking the time to pay attention to what you need. Self care is a practice. Self care is a way of living that will lead to a life where you feel good.
Why Is Self Care Important During The Holidays?
Self care is always important, but especially important during the holiday season. The holiday’s bring up various stress for many people. It is financial stress, the pressure of wrapping up end of the year projects at work, the triggers of being around family so much, the pressure for everything to be perfect and fun, and sometimes it’s stressful “just because.”
There are actually statistics that prove how stressful the holidays are for people. According to the American Psychological Association, 69% of people are stressed by the feeling of a lack of time, 69% of people are stressed by the feeling of a lack of money, and 51% are stressed out about the pressure to give or get gifts. Bottom line is, people are stressed and these stresses can manifest and effect our health. Stress can lead to illness, mood swings, situational depression, isolation, over eating, under eating, headaches, changed sleep patterns, and the list goes on. So, what can we do about it?
Have A Support System
Everyone needs a support system. Sometimes I feel like people hear the words “support system” and it feels so intense, but really a support system can be as simple as being surrounded by good friends and hanging out. There is no better or quicker medicine to make someone feel good than laughing and good friends are the best way to be able to help you laugh and have fun. In my opinion, part of self care is being able to put aside all the things you “have” to do for a couple hours so that you can relax to do the things you want to do and enjoy. Whether that’s doing some form of physical activity like going for a run, or spending time with friends, it’s important to have some fun set up and time to play where you can allow yourself to not feel guilty.
Pay attention to what it is you need or are feeling and listen to it. Some ways that are helpful to get in tune with these things is meditating. Meditation, through deep breaths and stillness, helps slow down the process and makes everything feel a little bit less overwhelming. Being more aware of what it is that you’re feeling and having a way to deal with them, like meditation, helps lead to a freer life and one where you can feel happy during stressful times.
Make To Do Lists
I am a huge fan of lists. Whenever I get stressed, my dad always says to me, “why don’t you write a list with everything you have to do and start checking it off as you go?” This simple suggestion has helped me so much. I make lists for everything.
I hope this article inspires you to take care of yourself during this holiday season. The holiday’s can be a super stressful and emotional time for many people, but it is temporary, and with a few adjustments in how we deal with these times, it can be really enjoyable.
