How To Sleep Better
Sleep is one of the most important things we can do. Without sleep, our mood, health, weight, skin, and overall well being is effected. I used to suffer from insomnia, but over the last few years I’ve figured out a few things that work which have completely shifted my sleep. I now not only can fall asleep easily, but I can stay asleep and I sleep for 8 hours a night! I’ve found 5 tips especially helpful to change how I feel throughout the day and led me to better sleep.
Sleep Tip #1: Exercise
Exercise has made a huge difference in my life. Exercise releases endorphins that not only make you a happier person but they also help release stress. I found that stress was a big reason I was staying awake, and it’s something I notice is a big reason why most people with insomnia suffer from.
Sleep Tip #2: Routine
Everyone needs structure in life. Structure makes people more productive and more relaxed. People also find peace in knowing what’s coming next (or at least some things). By creating routine, your mind can mentally prepare for the next routine step. For example, when you’re little, you may have had dinner with your parents, then it was bath time, then it was read in bed time, and then you went to sleep…and it was the same thing every night. It is the same thing as an adult. If every night you do something similar, it will be a lot easier to wind down and fall asleep.
Sleep Tip #3: Mindset
Making sure you are doing things that are good for you and that make you feel good will help put you a better mindset. A positive mindset typically leads to a more positive sleep. Doing things like exercising, taking a bath, reading a book and turning your phone on silent… these are all things that might make you feel good and will lead to a more relaxed mood.
Sleep Tip #4: Making Lists
I am a huge proponent of list making. I believe lists take the thought out of most things in life. Without a list, most of my day would be spent trying to remember where I have to be at what time, who I’m meeting with, what errand I have to run, when a certain deadline is due, etc… by writing all of this type of information down, it no longer takes space in my mind. I get to think about bigger things or, sometimes, I get to even think about nothing. If I am feeling stressed, I typically write a list with everything I have to do that is making me worry and I categorize it by what’s most important and I start checking things off as I go. When I do that, it also takes the power out of these things to help me realize that none of it is actually so hard to do, it’s just about scheduling the time.
Sleep Tip #5: Sleep Chocolate
If none of these tips are enough, there is sleep chocolates. Sleep chocolates have melatonin in them but somehow they work 1000x better for me than regular melatonin…and they taste good. I have taken prescription sleep medication and over the counter, and I really think these work the best if you really need extra assistance in your sleep.
Let me know if you end up trying any of these tips and how they work for you! They seriously changed my life and I hope they change yours too.
