Clear Your Mind Through Work Outs
Exercise has become a huge form of therapy for me. I wasn’t always like this though. In fact, I used to HATE working out besides doing Pilates. I found it unenjoyable and I could think of a million other things I’d rather be doing than exercising. About three years ago, something shifted. I can’t fully tell you what because I’m not sure, but something did. I’ve found 5 work outs to really help clear my mind and, forget how I look, they make me FEEL good.
Work Out #1: Soul Cycle
Soul Cycle is actually what got me into working out those years ago. I remember my friend invited me to a Soul Cycle class with her one day. She booked me on a bike front and center for my VERY first spin class. I walked into the room shy, insecure and honestly a bit nervous, but I left feeling so empowered. I did it and with 50 other people. I love how Soul Cycle feels like a community and you’re not alone in the ride, I love how they talk positively throughout the ride. I found it to be meditative. It was restorative. It was fun and it made you feel all the good things one would hope to feel.
Work Out #2: Running
Running was one of those things I said I would NEVER do and that I HATE. Two really strong words and I meant them. This last six months, I’ve picked up running. I wouldn’t say that I love how it feels or that it’s easy. Or even that I don’t want to stop while I’m doing it, but I feel so good afterward. I get such an adrenaline rush from running. I feel so empowered to know that my body can move like that and that if I needed to run to get somewhere, I could. It’s so rewarding. I am not a natural runner, and even with little practice, I am not a good runner — but I am capable.
Work Out #3: Yoga
Yoga is such a challenge for my body and because it is so slow and quiet, it is a great way to stretch and quiet my mind. I don’t practice yoga often but I find I am always a combination of relaxed and energized when I leave a class.
