Let’s Talk Wardrobe Detox

Actually, let’s back up… let’s talk wardrobe to start. We all have some things in common when it comes to this topic. Everyone needs and has a wardrobe. A wardrobe consists of one’s entire collection of clothes. We also all have moments where we feel really satisfied and content with our wardrobe and we also all have moments where we feel uninspired by our wardrobe. Now, let’s get started to the fun stuff (or to some of you, you may think not so fun stuff), a wardrobe detox!

What Is A Wardrobe Detox

A wardrobe detox is when you go through everything in your closet and sort through it. And yes, I mean everything. Underwear, bras, socks, pajamas… all of the little things you don’t think about when you think of your wardrobe. There are many ways to do one of these detox’s, some more efficient and some less. Growing up in a household where my mom was ultra organized and everything needed to have a home and purpose, I was basically raised to know how to do this…and if it was my mom’s choice, I would do this quarterly. Now that I live alone and and am the only one who has to live with my chaos, I do have to say I agree that quarterly is ideal to do this but, truthfully, I don’t make time for that.

How To Know It’s Time To Clean Out Your Wardrobe

The answer to this question is actually quite simple. If you find yourself saying any of these things, it is probably time to clean out your wardrobe. These are usually the tell tale signs for me: “I have nothing to wear today.” “I don’t like how anything is fitting me.” “There is so much clutter. I can’t fit anything else in here.” “I can’t find what I’m looking for.” “I haven’t worn this in forever.”

Detox Your Wardrobe Tips

There are so many tips to this to make the process easy and efficient. While this can seem like a daunting task that can get super messy, it doesn’t have to be. Take it from someone who used to do this in the most messy, overwhelming way (think clothes spread out everywhere on the floor so you couldn’t walk and then felt too overwhelmed to move it so it now lived on the floor) and had no choice but to figure out a better way.

Tip #1:

Make a list of everything you need to go through and start checking it off as you go. When going through this list, ask/tell yourself these questions/things:

  • If you haven’t worn it in 6 months then get rid of it.
  • If you look at it and it doesn’t spark joy, get rid of it.
  • If someone can’t go into your closet and pick out whatever outfit for you, get rid of it.
  • If it’s damaged get rid of it.

Tip 2:

Decide what no longer fits your style. It’s natural to have your style change and/or evolve. That’s actually a good thing. With that, means sometimes you need to get rid of things that no longer feel true to who you are anymore. There’s no need to hold onto something just because it’s nice if it doesn’t fit you anymore.

Tip #3:

Decide what’s no longer in style and then ask yourself if and when it comes back in style if it is something you’ll want to wear again or if you’re fine with never seeing it again. There will be some items that you answer yes to and other items that you’ll answer no to.

Tip #4:

Go through your socks, bras and underwear. This is something that gets overlooked the most, that I actually need to go through myself. It is easy to ignore that drawer, even though we need that drawer everyday, and accumulate so many of something that you don’t wear or aren’t in good condition anymore.

Wardrobe Detox Resources

What do I do with everything I’m getting rid of? You have many options! You can donate your clothes, sell your clothes, and there will be certain items (like ripped underwear) that you will throw away. Ask yourself if these items

Where To Sell Your Clothes:

There are in person places like Wasteland or Crossroads to sell your clothes for quick money and to get the items out of your house. If you don’t mind having the items sit in your house for a little bit longer, you can use apps like Poshmark or Depop which is basically Instagram for selling clothes. There are also alternative sites like Vestiaire Collective  or The Real Real for high end consignment.

Where To Donate Your Clothes

This is where google will be your best friend! Researching local places in your city will be the best way to find somewhere that is right for you. If you’re not going to donate to a local charity, Goodwill is always a great options and have so many locations and will even come pick items up from your home.

Wow! This is informative! When I detox my wardrobe I choose which one to donate and to sell. I usually sell clothes that I did not even use. I have a friend who also sell on Poshmark and I wonder how did she manage all the tedious stuff like promotions. She share her secret that she hires VA to manage her closet with all the sharing and following. I also do the same. It really works.
