Finding A Skincare Routine That Works
Finding a skincare routine seems easy and is actually more complicated than you would think. Because of it being more complicated, I made beauty and skincare a focus of mine this year. I have always loved skincare and knew it was important to incorporate into your daily routine, but I didn’t always see results which discouraged me from taking is seriously. Since then I realized I may not have been using the right products and that skincare routines DO work.
It took me a while to find one that I visibly see results from, and since finding mine, I realized it is always changing. It took me going to some of these beauty salons in Los Angeles to help find products I love and have since added a few others into the mix. I can confidently say I have found a skincare routine that is working for me and I have visible results from. With all of that, I wanted to share my beauty tips for Spring.
Spring Skincare Routine
Before I begin with my Spring skincare routine right now, I first wanted to acknowledge that Winter skin is so different than Spring skin. I personally prefer Spring skin (but I definitely had to adjust what I was using). Also, this routine of mine is based off of what my skin calls for in LA weather, which may look different and need different products for different climates.
I am going to go through step by step of what my skincare routine looks like today. My AM routine is pretty similar to my PM routine, just a with a few different steps. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Cleanse
I start my morning off each day with a light cleanser. Lately for the AM I’ve been keeping it simple with Cetaphil face wash. I like that it is light and doesn’t strip away all of my skin’s natural oils…especially for Spring where I like my face to look natural and glowy.
Step 2: Sunscreen
Recently I’m really into Neutrogena’s oil free sunblock and I put it on my face, neck, ears and the extra bit of it on my hands every morning after I wash my face. What I recently learned (which makes total sense) is that you need to reapply your sunblock multiple times a day, especially in the sunnier months for full sun protection and to avoid sun damage. I will start applying it 2x a day. I personally use spf 55 but try to use at least spf 15. Fun fact: I learned that the number of spf indicates the amount of time your skin is protected for. If you skin would usually burn in 10 minutes, it will takes 55x as long.
Step 3: Moisturize
All Winter I was using Egyptian Magic which is the richest and best moisturizer if your skin is really dry, or if you just want to glow and be so soft, but during the day for Spring it is a little much. I have switched this product out of my AM routine and replaced it with Control Collective’s oil free moisturizer.
Step 4: Lip Balm
After hearing about Glossier for years and resisting the trend (I don’t know why), I finally caved and bought a few products from them to try. I have to say, they definitely live up to the hype. The birthday batter lip balm is SO good! I have been alternating using that and my Avene and my lips feel great!
You’ll notice this routine isn’t too different from my AM routine. There are just a few extra steps to end the day, and obviously no sunblock.
Step 1: Pre Cleanse
I always rolled my eyes when people told me to start using a pre cleanse. I would think to myself oh god…now I have such a long night time routine and yet another step. I am a simple girl and like to keep my skincare routine simple because that is what works best with my sensitive skin type. What I realized is that pre cleanse’s actually make my night routine easier. It strips away all of my make up without drying out my skin, causing it to be flaky, or irritating it and making it red. Sometimes if I’m feeling lazy or my skin is feeling dry, all I’ll do is a pre cleanse and I’ll skip the wash after. My favorite pre cleanse is by Dermalogica.
Step 2: Cleanse
Step 3: Apply A Serum
I alternate between a few serums depending on what I feel my skin needs. I actually did a post recently on my face serums that work and think they’re amazing. One that I didn’t include in this post because I somehow forgot about until recently again is Eminence’s Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Serum. It smells so good that you’ll want to eat it and it feels even better on your face. Just trust me on this one!
Step 4: Moisturize
Staying hydrating is so important and I’ve definitely noticed a difference in my skin since I’ve made that a priority. For now, I’m still sticking with Egyptian Magic at nighttime.
Step 5: Lip Balm
Repeat the Glosser lip balm!
